Mary Jane O’Neill became the first Penn woman fencer to represent the United States in the Olympic Games, competing in 1988 at Seoul and again in 1992 at Barcelona.
O’Neill was a three-time All-Ivy Leavue selection in foil (1984-1986) a three-time First-Team All-American (1983-1985) and the NCAA individual championship, the first by a Penn women’s varsity team.
Following her senior year, O’Neill was the receipient of the Fathers’ Award, given annually to Pennsylvania’s outstanding senior woman student-athlete.
While training for the Olympics, she continued her studies in medical school at Harvard. O’Neill is now working at Massachusetts General Hospital as a radiologist.
