A Champion Makes His Point
By Michele Howe
With the quick strike of his blade and a determination to succeed, New Jersey native and fencing champion Peter Westbrook has made his mark and hopes to help others do the same.
Westbrook has gone from the tribulations of growing up in an urban ghetto and in a broken family to triumph as 13—time US national saber champion and six—time Olympian. His story unfolds within the pages of his book, “Harnessing Anger; The way of an American fencer” (7 stories press; 22.95), written with Tej Hazarika.
Westbrook’s book leads the reader into a world where the discipline of fencing not only brought him national and international championships, but inner peace and self-awareness.
In an interview, Westbrook discussed what led him to choose fencing and how that choice has led him to become executive director of the Peter Westbrook foundation, a non-profit organization based in New York.
